In line with a long-standing tradition, US President Donald Trump has paid tribute to Polish-American hero Casimir Pulaski.
In a commemorative declaration, Trump referred to Pulaski as “the great Polish hero who fought and died in America’s noble pursuit of freedom during the Revolutionary War.”
Trump spoke of Pulaski’s “tremendous legacy of fighting for freedom and democratic principles.”
He recalled that the Polish general is the "Father of the American Cavalry" and added that through his irreplaceable role in the American struggle for independence he became a part of the history of the United States.
The president also referred to the bilateral ties between Poland and the United States, saying: “The longstanding and enduring friendship of our two countries is strengthened and renewed each day by the more than 9 million people of Polish descent who are citizens of the United States.”
He added that Americans “greatly cherish the cultural, economic, and security ties that bind [the two nations], and look forward to a fruitful relationship in the years and decades to come.”
Pulaski Day was established by the Congress of the United States in 1929. A commemorative proclamation for the observance of Pulaski Memorial Day has been issued by US presidents annually ever since.
Another event honouring the memory of the Polish general, the Pulaski Parade, has been held annually in New York in early October since 1937.
General Pułaski, whose original name was Kazimierz Pułaski, is recognised as a national hero there for his contribution to the American Revolutionary War, which took place from 1775 to 1783.
Pułaski was made the first Commander of the American Cavalry after saving George Washington’s life at the Battle of Brandywine in 1777.
General Pułaski was posthumously granted honorary US citizenship in 2009.
