In a resolution adopted by acclamation on Friday, Polish MPs asked the government in Warsaw to launch “humanitarian aid for the victims of persecution in Belarus” and to "create the possibility of quickly accepting political refugees” from that country.

The lower house of Poland’s parliament voiced solidarity and support for the people of Belarus and called on the European Parliament, the European Council and the European Commission to “take decisive action to support Belarusian civil society.”

"We strongly demand that the authorities in Minsk immediately release all those detained and stop using repression and violence against the public," the resolution also said.

At least two protesters have died and around 6,700 were detained this week in a crackdown following a disputed landslide re-election win for strongman leader Alexander Lukashenko, a victory that protesters said was false because the ballot had been massively rigged, the Reuters news agency reported.
