Paweł Jabłoński was speaking after the ambassadors in an open letter voiced support for efforts "to raise public awareness of issues affecting the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) community and other communities in Poland facing similar challenges."
Respect for fundamental rights “obliges governments to protect all citizens from violence and discrimination and to ensure they enjoy equal opportunities,” added the letter.
It was signed by ambassadors in Warsaw including those of Australia, Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, the United Kingdom and the United States.
The letter, published by the US ambassador to Poland, Georgette Mosbacher, on Twitter, added: “To this end, and in particular to shield communities in need of protection from verbal and physical abuse and hate speech, we need to jointly work on an environment of non-discrimination, tolerance and mutual acceptance.”
Poland's Jabłoński responded by saying: "We are convinced that a discussion based on facts, and not on certain media narratives, invented theses which are not true – that is the way this discussion should look.”
He told Polish state news agency PAP: “We will certainly be explaining to all ambassadors, foreign partners, politicians and the media what the situation looks like, that Poland is a country for which human rights are one of the absolutely fundamental values, and the prohibition of discrimination against anyone for any reason is inscribed in the Polish constitution and fully respected.”
