Lt. Gen. Yakov Rezantsev, who reportedly died a day earlier, was the highest-ranked Russian officer to be killed, the ukrinform.net website reported, citing Ukraine's defence ministry.
According to an online report by the BBC, experts say low morale among Russian troops has forced senior officers closer to the front line.
The BBC cited a retired British Army officer as saying that the generals' deaths suggested a "highly successful sniper campaign which could degrade the Russian command structures."
Russian colonel killed by own men: official
Meanwhile, the commanding officer of Russia's 37th Motor Rifle Brigade, a colonel, apparently died in Ukraine after being attacked by his own men, a Western official has said, as cited in an earlier report by the British public broadcaster.
He was "deliberately run over by his own troops as a result of the scale of losses taken by his brigade," the official said, according to the bbc.com website.
