Mateusz Morawiecki hosted Natalia Gavrilita at his office in Warsaw, the state PAP news agency reported.

The two prime ministers signed off on Poland’s EUR 20 million long-term loan to Moldova, according to officials.

They also approved a three-year programme of bilateral cooperation in culture, education and science, the PAP news agency reported.

At a news conference afterwards, Morawiecki said his talks with Gavrilita focused on the "challenging situation" facing Moldova and Eastern Europe amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Today we are doing everything we can to help our Moldovan partners in their very difficult predicament,” Morawiecki told reporters.

He added that Moldova was grappling with an influx of refugees from Ukraine and “above all an economic and energy crisis,” while also being reliant on Russian energy resources.

Poland lends EUR 20 million to Moldova

Morawiecki said Poland was “giving Moldova a helping hand” by releasing the EUR 20 million loan.

The prime minister added it was important for European Union countries to support Moldova’s "bid for survival and a normal future."

He pledged that Poland would "advocate for Moldova" in Brussels and be "a good ambassador" for the country to help it deal with "its current problems and strategic challenges."

Morawiecki also expressed his appreciation for Chișinău’s efforts to eventually join the EU, the PAP news agency reported.

He said that both Poland and Moldova "realised that the survival of an independent Ukraine was in the interests of the entire European continent."

The Ukrainian people "are fighting for democracy, peace and the security of all European countries, but most of all the EU’s eastern flank, and Moldova as well,” Morawiecki stated.

'Poland is a role model for Moldova'

Meanwhile, Gavrilita thanked Poland for financial support and for urging Brussels to open up its market to Moldovan products.

She called on the EU to admit Moldova, Ukraine and Georgia to the bloc in the near future.

Gavrilita hailed Poland as “one of the main pillars of support for Moldova in the EU.”

“For Moldova, Poland is a model European country,” she said.

The meeting came as the Russian invasion of Ukraine continued for the seventh successive week.
