Tomasz Grodzki announced the initiative alongside the Czech Republic's Miloš Vystrčil in Prague on Wednesday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Earlier, the two top senators met in the Czech capital to discuss a range of issues, notably financial and military assistance to Ukraine and the postwar reconstruction of the country, reporters were told.

Grodzki said at a media briefing that the appeal to the world’s parliamentary leaders would take the form of a letter and be inspired by what he and Vystrčil saw in the devastated Ukrainian towns of Bucha and Irpen last week.

‘If we do too little in defence of Ukraine, history will not forgive us’

“We decided to issue this letter so that parliaments use their clout and lean on their governments to step up support for Ukraine, mainly in terms of military assistance,” Grodzki told reporters.

He cited the conclusion of the letter: “If we do too little in defence of Ukraine, history will not forgive us. If we do everything in the power of the free world to help Ukraine bring this cruel war to a victorious end, history will remember.”

Grodzki, who is making a two-day visit to the Czech Republic, held talks with Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala and President Miloš Zeman later on Wednesday, according to officials.

On Thursday, he is due to meet with Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský, lower-house Speaker Markéta Pekarová Adamová, and representatives from the country’s Polish community, PAP reported.

Grodzki's trip to Prague comes after he and Vystrčil last week led a visit by Polish and Czech senators to war-torn Ukraine.

Wednesday was day 56 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
