Mateusz Morawiecki unveiled the news at the premises of Huta Stalowa Wola (HSW), one of Poland’s biggest defence contractors, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
The PM described HSW, based in the southeastern city of Stalowa Wola, as “one of the jewels in the crown of the Polish arms industry.”
He stated: “We are in the process of signing one of the biggest, if not the biggest, arms export contracts in the last thirty years.”
Morawiecki revealed that the deal was being struck with Ukraine. He added that the Polish weaponry “will play a very significant role on the battlefields of eastern Ukraine,” as Kyiv battles the Kremlin's invasion.
The Polish PM said that Ukraine would pay part of the fee for the Polish armaments, with the rest to be covered by the European Union.
Poland’s arms export deal with Ukraine
Tuesday’s announcement refers to a PLN 3 billion (EUR 650 million) contract that will see Poland sell 54 Krab (Crab) self-propelled gun howitzers to Ukraine, the state PAP news agency reported.
The Krab gun howitzers are produced by the state-run HSW.
As part of security assistance to Ukraine, Poland had already provided its war-torn southeastern neighbour with around 250 T-72 tanks, the Grad multiple rocket launchers and the 2S1 Goździk (Carnation) self-propelled howitzers, according to news outlets.
Tuesday is day 104 of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
