Ryszard Legutko, in an interview for the Polish Press Agency (PAP) has criticized the European Union as being in a "poor state" of health and in need of thoroughgoing reform.
Though he said that the basic idea of European integration is a good one, Legutko criticised fundamental aspects of the European Union at present. He claimed that western European member states are essentially pro-Russian and are to a great extent responsible for the current crisis with Russia having made Europe unnecessarily dependent on Russian energy.
He added that "although it sounds strange" France and Germany in particular do not want American protection and prefer to be closer to Russia. He summarised the mood in the European parliament from western countries as "Russia may get a piece of Ukraine or not but let us return to the previous set up" wherein Europe can draw on Russia energy.
