Polish defence minister, US counterpart discuss Ukraine

Poland's Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak has said he has spoken on the phone with his US counterpart Lloyd Austin to discuss the latest developments in Russia's war against Ukraine.

Błaszczak said in a tweet on Monday that he and Austin talked about "Russian aggression and the current situation in Ukraine" during their "important phone call."

He added that the conversation also focused on "the details of US troop presence in Poland" as well as bilateral military cooperation, including efforts to modernize Poland's armed forces.

Meanwhile, Austin tweeted that he and Błaszczak spoke about "our close partnership in providing security assistance to Ukraine and ensuring that NATO deterrence remains strong."

Pentagon Press Secretary Air Force Brig. Gen. Pat Ryder said in a statement that Austin and Błaszczak spoke to discuss "the current security situation along NATO's eastern flank and joint efforts to enhance Ukraine's defense capabilities."

He added that Austin "praised Poland's leadership in providing support to Ukraine."

Austin and Błaszczak "agreed to continue to work closely together to enhance Alliance deterrence and defense," according to the statement.
