The German Federal Prosecutor's Office has explained that members of the Reichsbuerger group ("Citizens of the Reich") do not acknowledge the legitimacy of the current, democratic German state. Some want a return to monarchy and the German Empire, others support Nazism. The alleged plot sought to bring Prince Heinrich XIII P.R. to power.

Prosecutors said that one person detained is a Russian citizen, but current information leads them to believe that Russian officials in Germany did not respond to requests for cooperation.

Prosecutors added that the group supports deep state conspiracy theories, also advocated by QAnon - the group involved in the storming of the U.S. Capitol in January 2021.

In the early hours of Wednesday 7th December, German police carried out raids against 25 members and supporters of the Reichsbuerger group - 3000 officers were involved.
