The bilateral meeting between Poland's President Andrzej Duda and Italy's Sergio Mattarella began at the presidential palace in Warsaw shortly before noon local time, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
Duda and Mattarella were set to hold private talks, followed by a meeting of a wider group of officials from both countries, broadcaster TVP Info reported.
Marcin Przydacz, a top foreign-policy aide to the Polish president, said ahead of the meeting that the two heads of state would discuss international and bilateral cooperation between Poland and Italy and a range of security and migration issues.
Later on Monday, the Italian president was expected to meet with members of the Italian community in Poland and officials from the European Union's border control agency, Frontex, which is headquartered in Warsaw.
During his three-day official visit to Poland, Italy's Mattarella is also scheduled to meet with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki on Tuesday and attend the March of the Living at the site of the former Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp to pay tribute to the victims of the Holocaust, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
