Poland's Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said in a Twitter post: "Dear American friends, a happy 4th of July to you all."

He added: "The legacy of freedom and independence closely unites our nations. The Polish-American strategic partnership is the light of a better and safer future."

Polish Defence Minister Mariusz Błaszczak tweeted: "Happy 4th of July to all American friends back in the USA and those serving in Poland, especially in Camp Kościuszko, named after the Polish-American hero who fought for the independence of our both nations."

The Polish foreign ministry hailed a "close" Polish-American "friendship and alliance" and wished Americans "a joyful 4th of July."

The US ambassador to Warsaw, Mark Brzezinski, said in a Polish-language post that American Independence Day "is a special day that reminds us of our most important values - democracy, freedom and equality, but it is also a day of gratitude to those thanks to whom we can enjoy independence."

"Happy Birthday, America," Brzezinski tweeted.
