This week a secret Budeswehr (German Armed Forces) document was leaked to the Bild newspaper. The document criticises Ukrainian counteroffensive operations for using too small units in attacking Russian lines and inadequate training of leaders.

In an interview for The Times, Major General Rupert Jones defended Ukraine making the following main points:

  1. While it is in general true that military wisdom recommends attacking in larger units to be able to get behind Russian enemy lines, Ukraine is fighting "with one hand tied behind its back" - i.e. without air support.
  2. Jones emphasized the value of western training to Ukraine, but said that on the ground, Ukraine may have tactical reasons to make changes.
  3. Jones furthermore said that Ukraine is using a strategy to minimise loss of life on the Ukrainian side.
  4. General Jones added that the Bild article is "very interesting" but that it is unfortunate that feedback among allies is published during the war.
