Polish president heads for 5-day visit to United States

Poland’s president on Saturday departed for a five-day visit to the United States that will include participation in the United Nations General Assembly and in a debate on the Ukraine war at the UN Security Council.

Andrzej Duda will begin his trip by laying flowers at a memorial to the 1940 Katyń Massacre in Jersey City on Sunday morning, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Poland’s head of state will also make a speech to mark 84 years since the  September 17, 1939 Soviet invasion of Poland, according to officials. 

The Polish president is then scheduled to meet with the local Polish community, accompanied by  First Lady Agata Kornhauser-Duda.

On Monday, the Polish president will attend the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals Summit in New York, the PAP news agency reported.

Later in the day, Duda is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with the UN Secretary General António Guterres and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, according to officials.

On Tuesday, the Polish president will address the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Duda will then attend a working lunch with his Baltic counterparts: Lithuania’s Gitanas Nausėda, Latvia’s Edgars Rinkevics and Latvia’s Alar Karis, according to officials. 

On Tuesday evening, Poland’s first couple will take part in a reception to mark the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, hosted by US President Joe Biden.

On Wednesday, the Polish president is set to take part in an Open Debate of the UN Security Council on the situation in Ukraine, the PAP news agency reported.

Later in the day, Andrzej Duda and Agata Kornhauser-Duda will meet with representatives of America’s Jewish community to discuss trans-Atlantic relations.

Poland’s president is also set to hold bilateral talks with Andorran Prime Minister Xavier Espot Zamora and Vietnamese Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính, the PAP news agency reported.   

Poland’s head of state told reporters on Saturday that his bilateral talks with fellow world leaders in New York would focus on security and enlargement of the NATO alliance.

On Thursday, Duda will conclude his trip to the United States with an appearance at the UN Global Africa Business Initiative Forum and a visit alongside the first lady to the Józef Piłsudski Institute of America, according to officials. 

Saturday is day 570 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
