The appeal was issued by Climate and Environment Minister Anna Moskwa on Wednesday, the energetyka24.pl website reported.
Moskwa wrote on the X social media platform: “We expect Germany to remove 35,000 tonnes of waste that has reached Poland, and to bear the costs of this operation. We’ll outline our position at a hearing in Brussels today. We are fully determined to bring this case to a successful conclusion.”
'The Polish taxpayer cannot pay for German waste'
Moskwa added: “If we don’t secure this through the European Commission, we’ll file a lawsuit with the Court of Justice of the European Union. The Polish taxpayer cannot pay for German waste.”
Poland in July filed a grievance with the EU’s executive Commission against Germany for failing to remove waste illegally transported from Germany to Poland and stored there, according to a report at the time by the Reuters news agency.
The case concerns 35,000 tonnes of waste stored in seven sites in western and southern Poland, according to officials.
Poland has evidence of illegal shipment of refuse to Poland by German companies, Deputy Climate and Environment Minister Jacek Ozdoba told Polish state news agency PAP on Wednesday.
The Polish government has repeatedly asked German authorities at the state and federal level to remove the waste, officials told reporters.
