The evacuees arrived in Warsaw before 3 p.m. on Monday, public broadcaster Polish Radio's IAR news agency reported.

The 18 Polish citizens have been provided with medical care and psychological support, including a pediaetrician for children, a spokesman for the Polish Army said.

He added that the army was ready to carry out further evacuations, depending on decisions made by the foreign ministry and President Andrzej Duda's National Security Bureau (BBN), Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau told lawmakers that the evacuation of Poles from the Gaza Strip, amid the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, "is an ongoing process."

Rau said "the crucial thing is that the process has been launched," adding that the Polish government "remains in contact" with authorities in Israel and Egypt as well as with the Palestinian National Authority.

The Polish foreign minister said that "the long-term efforts of our diplomats" and "coordination of efforts with the president" have produced "the intended effect" in launching the evacuation.

The war between Israel and Hamas broke out when the Palestinian Islamist group launched attacks from the Gaza Strip on October 7, killing 1,400 people and kidnapping more than 200 as hostages, the British broadcaster BBC reported.

Israel has since been bombing Gaza, as well mounting a ground assault on the territory, killing more than 11,000 people, including more than 4,500 children, according to Gaza's Hamas-run health ministry.

On Monday, there was fighting close to Gaza's biggest hospital, Al Shifa, which is now "nearly a cemetery," the World Health Organisation said, according to the BBC.
