The release was made possible by a recently reached ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, which also facilitates increased humanitarian aid deliveries to Gaza.

According to the Polish foreign ministry, the development is a result of continuous international diplomatic efforts.

"Congratulations to all partners involved in achieving this significant step. We hope that the ceasefire will be maintained. We emphasize the need for the swift release of all abducted individuals,"the statement reads.

Additionally, Poland reiterated its firm demand for Israel's approval to ensure the safe departure of the remaining Polish citizens from the Gaza Strip.

Under the existing agreement, a total of 50 hostages are set to be exchanged for 150 Palestinian prisoners, some convicted on weapon charges and violent offences.

The exchange is scheduled to occur over a four-day period, with the initial release of 24 hostages having taken place on Friday. Another group was expected to be freed on Saturday.

The truce is a direct response to the intense hostilities that began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas executed a comprehensive land, sea, and air assault on Israel. This initial attack resulted in over 1,200 deaths, including many Israelis and foreign nationals.

The ongoing airstrikes by Israel in Gaza, which followed, have resulted in a staggering death toll. According to the Gaza Health Ministry, as of November 23, 2023, over 14,300 Palestinians, including more than 6,000 children, have lost their lives, making it one of the deadliest conflicts for children in recent history.
