"The Hungarian position is against Europe and everything that Europe stands for," Landsbergis said ahead of a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday.

He framed the issue as a "clash of ideologies" between those supporting a strong Europe and those opposed to the bloc’s principles, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

This dispute overshadowed the EU's Brussels meeting, with Hungary also resisting proposed sanctions against Russia, including a ban on liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) imports, according to news reports.

The media also reported that a group of countries including Austria and Greece insisted on extending negotiation promises to Bosnia and Herzegovina alongside Ukraine.

Moreover, the EU faces internal disagreements over a proposed financial package for Ukraine, with member countries hesitant to increase contributions. This deadlock threatens strategic decisions vital for regional and global stability, underscoring the deep divisions within the EU on critical foreign policy issues.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.

Monday is day 656 of Russia's war on Ukraine.
