Addressing a plenary session of the European Parliament on Wednesday, von der Leyen highlighted the critical support required by Ukraine, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.
"We must give Ukraine what it needs to be strong today; so it can be stronger tomorrow at the table when it is negotiating a long-lasting and just peace," she said.
However, the drive is currently facing a major hurdle due to opposition from Hungary, which has consistently blocked both military and financial support for Ukraine.
This week's EU summit in Brussels, set to discuss these issues, will be crucial in determining the path forward for EU-Ukraine relations and the bloc's unified response to the conflict.
Von der Leyen also stressed the need for the EU to play a decisive role in Ukraine's future, saying that Ukraine has carried out key reforms in accordance with recommendations and that it should be rewarded for this.
