Poland's Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and Ukraine's Rustem Umerov held talks on Friday, the defence ministry in Warsaw announced.

The two discussed regional security, further assistance for Ukraine's defence against Russia and the incursion by a Russian missile into Polish airspace last week, according to officials.

Ukraine's defence minister said on social media afterwards it had been a "productive call" in which he updated the Polish defence chief on the "situation on the frontlines and recent terorist attacks."

Umerov also expressed his gratitude for Poland's "intentions to increase its role within the capability coalitions, which will benefit the security of Europe and Poland’s national interests."

He added he had invited Kosiniak-Kamysz, who also serves as Poland's deputy prime minister, to visit Kyiv.

On December 29, an air object temporarily entered Polish airspace, during Russia's large-scale air assault on Ukrainian cities that killed 39 people.

The Polish Army later said the object was a "Russian cruise missile" that then left Polish airspace.

Readings from Polish and NATO radars, as well as a ground search carried out at the weekend, confirmed that the missile had left Polish territory, officials said on Tuesday.

Kyiv said Moscow had fired at least 500 attack drones and missiles against Ukraine between December 29 and January 2, aiming to cause maximum destruction.

Poland's Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski this week urged Ukraine's allies to provide Kyiv with long-range missiles to strike Russian launch sites, as well as with financial aid, after the Kremlin's latest wave of air attacks on Ukraine.

Friday is day 681 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
