The UK ministry of defence made the assessment in its latest intelligence update, published on social media on Friday.

Over the past week, ground combat between Ukrainian and Russian troops has resulted in a "static frontline" or "very gradual, local Russian advances in key sectors," according to officials in London.

Russia continues a "large scale but inconclusive" offensive near Ukraine's northeastern city of Kupyansk, the UK ministry of defence said.

Meanwhile, heavy fighting continues for the eastern city of Avdiivka, while Russia made some gains around Marinka in late 2023.

Ukraine has "maintained a stable front line" around the Russian-held Bakhmut in the eastern Donetsk region, amid small-scale Russian attacks, according to British officials.

In the south, Russia has likely made minimal progress in its attempt to drive Ukrainian troops from their bridgehead on the eastern bank of the Dnipro river in the Kherson region, the UK ministry of defence assessed.

On Friday, Ukrainian and Russian forces clashed 56 times, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Russia launched three missile attacks, 16 air strikes, and 12 attacks from multiple-launch rocket systems, killing Ukrainian civilians, officials in Kyiv said.

Russia also fired 29 attack drones on Ukraine overnight into Friday, with Ukraine's air defences shooting down 21 of them, according to the Ukrainian General Staff.

Meanwhile, Ukraine conducted air strikes on five concentrations of Russian troops, and also fired missiles into a Russian command post, a Russian ammunition depot, and a Russian artillery system, the military command in Kyiv reported.

Friday is day 681 of Russia’s war on Ukraine.

Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.
