France's President Macron has named Gabriel Attal the new Prime Minister. At 34 he is the youngest to hold that office in French history and the first openly gay person in the role.

Macron is keen to regain initiative with poor poll results dogging his presidency since earlier this year. Right-wing leader Marine Le Pen appears to have succeeded in doing what Poland's Konfederacja aims to - distancing itself from its extremist roots to have a chance at rule.

Macron has expressed his willingness to cooperate more closely with Poland once Law and Justice is out of power - strengthening the so-called "Weimar Triangle" of France, Germany and France.

Le Monde writes:

"Since he defeated the far right to win a second term in 2022, Macron has faced protests over unpopular pension reforms, the loss of his overall majority in parliamentary elections and controversy over immigration legislation. While Macron cannot run again in 2027 presidential elections, relaunching his government is seen as crucial to helping prevent Marine Le Pen from becoming president."
