"Putin is failing"
In the first of the interview, Sikorski agreed with Biden's characterisation of the current military status as "Putin's failure" to accomplish his (extremely optimistic) goal of taking control of Ukraine "within days or weeks":
"His aim was to recolonise Ukraine; he thought it would take 3 days and he's clearly failed in that."
"We just need to stay the course"
During the interview Sikorski repeated two phrases familiar from British military history: "stay the course" and everyone should "do their bit". This was clearly directed to the international community and the US in particular - not to give up on Ukraine when progress is - according to Sikorski - palpable.
Poland's contribution
Sikorski emphasized that Poland is "doing its bit" by making record armaments purchases, hosting 1.6 million refugees and as functioning as an international "hub" for "80% of western assistance".
Will the US and the world "stay the course"?
Amanpour implied that Poland's determination is related to its position as a "frontline state". Other countries, the US in particular might not have the long-term determination. Sikorski replied that he "hoped" they would have the determination because "important principles" are at stake. "That you may not change borders by force on the pretext of aiding compatriots [e.g. ethnic Russians in Ukraine]."
Polish and American national politics versus foreign policy
Retuning to the firmer ground of interests and real politik, Sikorski noted with satisfaction that Harris has been appealing to Polish Americans especially in the key battle-ground state of Pennsylvania. Harris has said that Trump's sycophantic attitude to Putin would leave Poland exposed and that Putin would "eat Trump for breakfast".
Sikorski expressed pride in the fact that Poland removed its populists from power with a 75% turnout, but did not mention that Law and Justice were also firm allies of Ukraine's cause.
