The Polish and Iranian foreign ministers met at a crucial moment in the Middle East crisis - during a period of escalation, just before Israel fired missiles on a Beirut suburb and Iran declared that "this changes the rules of the game".

During the meeting the head of Poland's diplomacy - which took place in the days of the General Debate of the UN's General Assembly - Sikorski emphasized Poland's "neutral" position in recognising both Israel and Palestine's right to exist peacefully within internationally recognised borders.

"Poland recognises the statehood of Israel and Palestine and appeals to Iran to recognise Israel's right to exist within secure borders."

The Iranian Mehr News Agency also covered the meeting of the two foreign ministers. On the same day the Iranian agency's leading headline is "Iran reacts to fresh deadly strikes of Israel on Beirut".
