In his conversation with Richard Quest, Trzaskowski emphasized that Poland plays a key role among the countries supporting Ukraine in its war with Russia, leading NATO's European members in defense spending (which amounts to nearly 5% of Poland's GDP).
The politician also discussed how he believes a change in the U.S. administration would impact global international relations.
He stated that Donald Trump is a realist and cannot allow a war ending that Putin might see as a victory, as it would weaken both the United States and NATO.
Through social media, Trzaskowski also shared that among the topics discussed was the political situation in Poland, which, as he pointed out, "American media are well aware of."
Trzaskowski promises to cooperate with Trump, support Ukraine, and drive reforms
Program host Richard Quest pointed out that Poland's current president, Andrzej Duda, is complicating the prime minister's ability to fulfill campaign promises, ranging from LGBT rights to changes in the judicial system, which were modified by the national-populist Law and Justice Party (PiS).
Trzaskowski responded that if elected president, he would support the plan for reforms promised by the Civic Coalition (KO) to voters.
He was also asked if, after his potential victory, Poland would politically shift more toward centrism, in a way that could be summarized as "Less Viktor Orban, more Ursula von der Leyen."
In his answer, Trzaskowski used Ukraine as an example. He stated that Poland's support for Ukraine remains consistent, even with populist conservatives, and that under the current coalition, Poland has a stronger voice in both NATO and the EU. As a result, there are no concerns that cooperation with the new U.S. president would not be successful.
For him, priorities would include issues related to security and the economy, followed by social welfare, as these are the most important to his voters.
Poland will shift toward centrist policies if I win, says Trzaskowski
Trzaskowski described his worldview as centrist and emphasized that although populists have always portrayed him as representing the left, he has great respect for Polish traditions and is capable of engaging in dialogue with conservatives.
He also highlighted that he would certainly be able to work with Donald Trump and confirmed his readiness to cooperate with the Republican team of the new White House administration.
