Polish embassy in Bangkok evacuated after earthquake

A powerful earthquake struck Myanmar, also felt in Thailand and China’s Yunnan province, on Friday, prompting the evacuation of the Polish embassy in Bangkok due to structural damage.

The 7.7-magnitude earthquake, with its epicenter about 10 kilometers underground, was in Myanmar. Strong tremors were also felt in Thailand and China. In Bangkok, office workers and shoppers were evacuated, and metro services were suspended.

According to Paweł Wroński, a spokesman for the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MSZ), the ministry has not yet confirmed whether any Polish citizens were among the victims.

Embassy staff are attempting to contact emergency services to determine if any Polish tourists were affected, as reported by the Polish state news agency PAP.

Through social media, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MSZ) confirmed that, "In connection with the earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand, local authorities have confirmed that no Polish citizens are among the victims. The situation is being closely monitored by the Polish Embassy in Bangkok."

Casualties and damage in the region

At least 43 people remain trapped under the rubble of a collapsed high-rise in Bangkok, and the city has declared a state of emergency.

Meanwhile, in Myanmar, at least three people have died, and a partially collapsed mosque was reported. The ruling military junta has requested international humanitarian aid and declared a state of emergency in six regions.
