The centre will be built in the port city of Ustka, PGE announced on Monday.
Operations centre for offshore power plants
“The PGE Group will build an operational-and-service centre for its offshore wind farms and an Excellence Centre for Offshore Wind Energy in the port of Ustka,” the company said in a statement, as cited by Polish state news agency PAP.
Overseen by PGE Group‘s offshore power division PGE Baltica, construction work is set to start in 2024, with the new facility slated for opening in 2026, officials told reporters.
The centre will provide the necessary monitoring and maintenance of PGE Group’s offshore wind farms in the Baltic Sea, the company said.
Meanwhile, in its additional role as a centre of excellence, the Ustka facility will train future experts in the maintenance and development of offshore power plants, as well as test and implement innovative technology for offshore wind farms, officials added.
Offshore wind farms in Baltic Sea
The PGE Group is currently working on a two-part 2.5 GW offshore wind farm in the Baltic Sea, dubbed Baltica, due for launch in 2026 or 2027, PAP reported.
Another offshore plant, the 0.9 GW Baltica 1, will come online after 2030, at a location some 80 kilometres from the coast, slightly to the north of Baltica, reporters were told.
In all, the PGE Group plans to have at least 6.5 GW worth of offshore power plants in the Baltic Sea up and running by 2040, officials said.
The PGE Group’s CEO Wojciech Dąbrowski told a briefing on Monday that the new operations and excellence centre would “change the face of the Ustka port” as well as “provide an impetus for the growth of the whole region and for the creation of new jobs,” the PAP news agency reported.
