Mateusz Morawiecki has announced the continuation of zero rate VAT on foodstuffs. The special rate will continue "at least for the first half of 2023," he said.
Morawiecki said the decision comes in the context of challenges - inflation and "two viruses". The two viruses, according to Morawiecki, are Coronavirus and "Russian Imperialism."
Morawiecki said that "several economists" calculated that the zero rate VAT on food will reduce inflation next year by "3 to 4%."
The prime minister added that his government's policy was to fight inflation "while preserving employment levels" and contrasted this approach to the "three waves of unemployment" Poland has gone through - two "Balcerowicz waves" and one "Tusk wave". (Leszek Balcerowicz was minister of finance from 1989 to 1991 and from 1997 to 2000. Donald Tusk was prime minister from 2007 to 2014.)
