Employment down, wages up in Polish firms y/y in January: stats office

Employment in Polish companies dropped by 0.2 percent in January on average in year-on-year terms, the country’s statistics office reported on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, average wages in Poland's corporate sector in January increased by 12.8 percent compared with the same month a year earlier, the state-run Statistics Poland (GUS) agency said.

The average gross Polish monthly wage last month was PLN 7,768.35 (EUR 1,797, USD 1,936), according to the statistical office.

The figures are for companies with more than nine employees.

The Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy this month estimated that Poland's unemployment rate rose to 5.4 percent in January, from 5.1 percent in December.
