An investigation is underway to determine the causes of the accident at the Grupa Azoty plant, one of Europe's largest nitrogen producers.

Two employees suffered burns during the incident in the city of Puławy on Monday, Grupa Azoty confirmed.

One of the injured employees was in serious condition and was airlifted to a specialist hospital in Łęczna in the eastern Lubelskie province.

The other employee, with lighter injuries, received first aid and was taken to a municipal hospital in nearby Dęblin.

The Grupa Azoty nitrogen plant in Puławy ranks second in the European Union in the production of nitrogen and multi-component fertilizers. It is also Poland's only producer of melamine, used in the automotive, textile, paper and electrical industries.

Employing a workforce of over 3,400, the plant also produces polyamide, oxo alcohols, plasticizers and titanium dioxide.
