The 2024 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) has the University of Warsaw and the Jagiellonian University in the southern Polish city of Kraków listed in the 401-500 band.

Meanwhile, the Gdańsk University of Technology is ranked in the 801-900 band, while the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań, the AGH University of Science and Technology in Kraków, the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, the Warsaw University of Technology, and the Wrocław Medical University are all ranked in the band between 901 and 1,000.

The prestigious ranking, also known as the Shanghai List, has been published since 2003 and is now compiled by Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, an international organisation that focuses on higher education research.

This year, little changed at the top of the list, Polish state news agency PAP reported. America’s Harvard was declared the best university in the world. Stanford came in second, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology was ranked third.

Britain's Cambridge University was ranked fourth and the University of Oxford was listed in seventh place.

The top 10 includes eight American and two British universities.

Last year, there were nine Polish universities in the top 1,000 list, down from 11 in 2022.

The ranking is based on indicators such as the number of graduates and employees who have won the Nobel Prize or the Fields Medal; the number of publications in Nature and Science journals; the number of highly-cited academics and publications included in selected indexes; as well as achievements in relation to the size of the institution, the PAP news agency reported.
