Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz on Friday appealed for greater international naval involvement in securing the Baltic Sea, while announcing a massive PLN 1 billion (EUR 230 million) deal for the construction of a new rescue ship for the Polish Navy.

Kosiniak-Kamysz said that ensuring the security of the Baltic Sea requires increased efforts from both the countries in the region and other allied nations.

"The Baltic must be better protected," he stressed in a speech during a ceremony accompanying the signing of the contract for the new ship.

Kosiniak-Kamysz added that Poland "is initiating cooperation with NATO" and "holding discussions," including with Finland, "regarding threats such as actions by the Russian fleet and incidents at sea."

The agreement announced by Kosiniak-Kamysz is of significant value to the economy because the construction of the ship will take place domestically, supporting the development of the Polish shipbuilding industry and job creation, state news agency PAP reported.

The deal is also part of a broader effort to bolster national security in response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, according to officials.

Over the past year, the Polish government has signed around 130 defense contracts with a total value of over PLN 153 billion (EUR 35 billion), Kosiniak-Kamysz said
