"Die Welt," citing a confidential letter sent to EU economy and finance ministers, reported on Thursday that Poland, holding the presidency of the EU Council, is working to convince Europe to adopt nuclear energy as an alternative to Russian energy sources.

One of Germany's largest newspapers highlights Poland's push to reduce imports of Russian energy, including gas and oil, while ensuring stable energy supplies to Europe and even lowering electricity and gas prices.

The government of Donald Tusk emphasized in the letter that nuclear power is vital for the energy transition, delivering reliable and cost-effective energy supplies, and boosting the competitiveness of European industry.

The report notes that Poland’s stance is controversial, especially in Germany, which opposes nuclear energy development. Poland is also advocating for cutting EU bureaucracy, strengthening food security, and prioritizing defense spending as part of its leadership during the first half of 2025.

Die Welt suggests that Poland may succeed in advancing its proposals, particularly given the temporary weakening of leadership in France and Germany, with Donald Tusk potentially playing a pivotal role in these efforts.
