Citing safety concerns, Poland’s Infrastructure Ministry revealed that the Maritime Office in Gdynia has ordered the Port of Gdynia Authority to relocate the decommissioned vessel.
The “Khatanga” was originally detained by Polish authorities in 2017 for failing routine Port State Control inspections. Its owner, Russia’s Murmansk Shipping Company, declared bankruptcy in 2020, leaving the ship abandoned.
The vessel has since been labeled a potential environmental, navigational, and intelligence risk.
The port authority is seeking reimbursement from the Russian operator for dockage fees accrued during the tanker’s eight-year stay.
Officials say the ship, previously moored near Gdynia’s Kościuszko Square, now sits at a repair wharf under the port’s administration since 2021.
