According to the US State Department, Poland has requested to buy 400 AIM-120D3 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (AMRAAM), 16 AIM-120D3 AMRAAM guidance sections, and one AIM-120 AMRAAM Instrumented Test Vehicle.
The package also includes "AMRAAM control sections, missile containers, and support equipment; Common Munitions Built-in-Test Reprogramming Equipment (CMBRE); ADU-891 adapter group test sets; KGV-135A encryption devices; Computer Program Identification Numbers (CPINs); spares and repair parts, consumables and accessories, and repair and return support; weapons system support and software; classified software delivery and support; classified publications and technical documentation; transportation support; studies and surveys; U.S. Government and contractor engineering, technical, and logistics support services; and other related elements of logistics and program support."
The planned deal "will support the foreign policy goals and national security of the United States by improving the security of a NATO Ally that is a force for political and economic stability in Europe," the Defense Security Cooperation Agency said last Tuesday.
The proposed sale "will improve Poland’s capability to meet current and future threats by providing air-to-air defense to protect Polish and allied forces in transition or combat and significantly improve the Polish contribution to NATO requirements," the DSCA said in a statement.
It added that "Poland already has AMRAAM in its inventory and will have no difficulty absorbing these articles into its armed forces."
Under US law, the deal has yet to be approved by Congress.
Polish Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz welcomed the news, saying: "Strategic Polish-US cooperation is yielding results – the latest air-to-air missiles will be delivered to our air force."
He added: "This is another step in the significant modernization of the Polish Armed Forces."
The AIM-120D3 missiles that Poland is buying are the most modern version manufactured by US defence contractor Raytheon in Tucson, Arizona since August 2022, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
