Poland introduced the relief package after the US-Iran war sent global oil prices sharply higher and threatened shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil transit routes.

With oil markets stabilising, the government has gradually phased out the emergency measures.

"The war triggered a sudden surge in fuel prices, but those prices have since stabilised, and this programme was always intended as a temporary emergency measure, necessary under the circumstances," said Regional Policy and Funds Minister Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz.

"From the outset, however, I argued that we also needed a windfall tax on the excess profits of fuel companies as a long-term structural solution, and that is now becoming a reality, with legislation to that effect making its way through parliament," she added.
