Including about 270 km of "terrain impassable to the enemy," such as swamps and forests, as well as storage facilities and linear fortifications, the total length of the secured eastern border will reach about 470 km, he said.
"Today, saying that Poland is in peacetime is certainly an insufficient definition," Tomczyk said, adding that more than 5,000 Polish troops were deployed along the Polish-Belarusian border.
Tomczyk was presenting the government"s measures to strengthen Poland's defence capabilities and NATO's eastern flank in response to a request from a group of lawmakers.
He said Poland had fundamentally changed its national security doctrine in recent years, including by giving the armed forces responsibility for protecting critical infrastructure and introducing "pre-authorisation for automatically engaging missiles."
Tomczyk outlined five "ironclad rules" of Polish security, including the principles that Russia is a threat and NATO and the European Union are allies.
The other principles, he said, are that the country supports its armed forces; pro-Russian views should not be accepted in public debate; and Poland should pursue a single foreign policy.
Tomczyk also highlighted the East Shield and SAFE defence programmes, saying 19 agreements had been signed for East Shield components under the SAFE programme.
Since December 2024, agreements worth PLN 428 billion (around 100 billion) have been signed, Tomczyk said, describing the spending as an investment in Poland's security.
Jakub Stefaniak, deputy head of Prime Minister Donald Tusk's office, said Poland had spent more than PLN 3 billion (EUR 700 million) on securing its eastern border since 2023.
