The construction of an 870 km long railway line connecting Tallinn with Warsaw will be exposed to climate change, said company RB Rail, which commissioned an expert study in the Baltic States.
The company said: “Based on the analysis of past 30-year climate and weather data and national-level climate projections, the study concluded that [the] Baltic region would gradually experience milder winters with less snow, but more wet snow, freezing rain, glazed frost and ice formation events. In the summertime, more frequent heatwaves are likely, leading to maximum temperatures reaching 40˚C.”
The study is aimed at helping to adapt the infrastructure so that it can be maintained and prepared for different scenarios of climate change.
More frequent adverse weather events will affect not only the execution of the project, but also future passengers, Poland’s PAP news agency said.
The construction of the railway route is to cost EUR 6 billion. Rail Baltica is to be completed in 2026.
