Poland is wary of Russia and is seeking alternative sources of supplies in order to become independent of its giant neighbour to the east.
PGNiG said it had sent Gazprom notice that it wanted to end the so-called Yamal contract as of December 31, 2022.
Poland’s Secretary of State for Strategic Energy Infrastructure, Piotr Naimski, said in February that his country would stop buying Russian gas after its long-term supply deal with Russia’s state-owned producer Gazprom expires in three years.
Naimski said at the time that Poland would focus on other sources of supplies, naming the Baltic Pipe, a planned new pipeline that will link Poland with Norway via Denmark.
Poland would also seek to diversify supplies by signing new contracts for the purchase of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the United States and Qatar, Naimski said.
