Marek Gróbarczyk, the Minister of Maritime Affairs and Inland Navigation, said that PLN 400 million (USD 104m, EUR 94m) would be allocated this year for small water retention and land improvement projects.

One of the aims was to counteract drought in agricultural areas, he added.

“This will be a very difficult spring, because we have little precipitation now,” Gróbarczyk told journalists earlier this week.

Poland has suffered water shortages stemming from a lack of rain and high temperatures for several years.

Poles sweltered under heatwaves last summer, though temperatures in other European countries were even higher, with records set in the Netherlands and Germany.
