The new facility is to be built between the Polish capital, Warsaw, and the central city of Łódź, and aims to integrate air, rail and road transport.

The Polish government’s pointman on the project, Marcin Horała, said that under one contract, South Korea's largest airport, Incheon, would become a strategic advisor to the Polish initiative.

The other deal will be between the governments of Poland and South Korea, and will see the two countries working together on raising capital, developing high-speed rail services and spatial planning.

The first passengers will be able to use the new airport towards the end of 2027, public broadcaster Polish Radio's IAR news agency reported.

Horała said in 2020 that in its first year of operation, the new airport is expected to handle 20 to 25 million passengers. “Later, this will gradually increase,” he added.

President Andrzej Duda said last year that a host of big-ticket projects undertaken by Poland's government were helping steer the country through the global coronavirus crisis.
