Polish economy grows 8.5% in Q1 2022: flash estimate

The Polish economy grew 8.5 percent in the first quarter of this year, the country’s Central Statistical Office (GUS) said on Tuesday in a flash estimate.

The figure was 0.4 percentage points higher than forecast by economists polled by state news agency PAP.

Poland's gross domestic product expanded by 7.6 percent in the final quarter of last year, according to the state-run statistics agency.

Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki predicted last month that Poland's 2022 GDP would grow no less than 4 percent despite Russia's war on Ukraine.

The European Commission on Monday revised downward its forecast for Polish economic growth this year to 3.7 percent, from a previous projection of 5.5 percent, amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The Polish statistics office is expected to report full first-quarter data on May 31.
