Anna Moskwa said on Friday that more talks were needed "about the American offer to clarify some issues,” Polish state news agency PAP reported.

She told private broadcaster Polsat News in an interview that the government was determined to meet its deadline to make the decision.

She said: "Under the Polish nuclear energy programme, this decision should be made by the end of this year.”

She added: “We are determined to meet this deadline.”

Moskwa told Polsat News: "This decision should be made by the end of the year, so 2026 remains a realistic date for launching the construction of the first nuclear reactor.”

Moskwa is scheduled to visit Washington this weekend together with Deputy Prime Minister Jacek Sasin for talks with US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm.

The US government has teamed up with the nuclear power company Westinghouse to offer Poland cooperation on civil nuclear energy, according to officials.

Asked about the American offer in the interview, Moskwa said: “Discussions are still under way. There are some issues we would like to clarify with the American side. We prefer to do it in person rather than through correspondence.”

Poland has received offers for the construction of nuclear power plants from France’s EDF, South Korea’s KHNP, and a joint offer by the Westinghouse company and the US government, the PAP news agency reported.
