On Monday, Techland's founder and CEO Paweł Marchewka announced, that the Chinese tech giant Tencent acquired the majority of shares in his company. The exact amount paid was not disclosed, but Techland's value was recently estimated around 2 billion euro - which would make it the biggest merger and acquisition ever in Poland.

Marchewka founded Techland in 1991 as a small IT firm focused on software localisation and game reviews. Gradually, he turned his company into a game development studio, and in 2015 Techland released a worldwide hit "Dying Light". The game sold over 20 million copies around the globe, and was followed by an equally successful sequel in 2022. All of this propelled Marchewka into 5th position on the "wealthiest man in Poland" list, according to last year's ranking by Forbes magazine.

Tencent, who acquired Techland, is a Chinese media and technology giant, valued at over 400 billion euro and globally investing in companies all across the board - from video and music streaming, through games to e-commerce and messaging apps. The biggest game development company in their portfolio so far is Riot Games - the creators of "League of Legends", one of the highest grossing games in history.

Hopefully, with the newly gained backing of Tencent, the upcoming projects by Poland's Techland will take the world by storm in a similar manner.
