Andrzej Duda made the statement at a conference summarising progress on the construction of the mega-air hub,  in Warsaw on Thursday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The president said that the planned facility, called CPK, “represents one of Poland’s key investments in the first half of the 21st century.”

He stressed: “We’ll have a world-class transport hub.”

The president added that “35,000 jobs will be created at the mega-airport and in the surrounding area,” and more related jobs would be created elsewhere in the country.

He described the CPK as a “treasure” and noted it would be more than a civil airport.

Duda told the conference: “We’ll have a vast airport where various aircraft will be able to land, not just passenger planes, but also, if necessary, the biggest planes, carrying military supplies and soldiers.”

He added Poland needed suitable facilities “for swift redeployment of troops and equipment, if necessary.”

The state-owned CPK, situated between Warsaw and the central city of Lódź, will be designed to integrate air, rail and road transport, according to officials.

The CPK’s airport is to be launched in 2028 to cater for 40 million passengers, the government said.

Following subsequent expansion, by 2060 the CPK will be able to handle up to 65 million passengers, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
