EU countries hope to approve a 16th package of restrictions in February to mark the third anniversary of the war, the Reuters news agency reported.

It said the European Commission, the executive arm of the 27-member bloc, held informal meetings with EU countries on Tuesday to discuss details of the upcoming package.

In a letter late last year, 10 EU countries proposed further sanctions on Russian trade, including its output of metals such as aluminium, according to Reuters.

The EU last month approved its 15th package of sanctions against Moscow "with the objective of further limiting Russia’s ability to wage its illegal, unprovoked and unjustified war of aggression against Ukraine."

Russia invaded Ukraine by land, air and sea on February 24, 2022, starting the largest military conflict in Europe since World War II.

Tuesday is day 1,055 of Russia's war on Ukraine.
