The organisation says it is ready to offer various forms of support to Poland's eastern neighbour, including medical assistance to Ukrainian refugees arriving at the Polish border.

The Polish Red Cross has already donated 370 camp beds for potential Ukrainian arrivals and offered to supply sleeping bags, blankets, food and hygiene products, Poland's PAP news agency reported.

The organisation also said it could help organise a relief convoy, and was raising funds for Ukrainian refugees.

Those wishing to donate can do so at the following bank account: 16 1160 2202 0000 0002 7718 3060. Transfers should be titled: UKRAINA.

The money will be spent primarily on food and medical supplies, the Polish Red Cross said.

In the early hours of Thursday morning, Russia announced a "special military operation" against Ukraine to eliminate what President Vladimir Putin said was a "serious threat" against his country.

Despite appeals and warnings from the international community, Russia on Thursday launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine by land, air and sea, the biggest attack by one state against another in Europe since World War II, the Reuters news agency reported.

Top Polish officials have condemned Russia's attack on Ukraine and vowed to support the Ukrainian people.
