According to Zakopane police, the lightning struck the installations of a rope park mounted at the entrance to the popular valley, passing to a tree under which a flock was standing.
The shepherd, who was some distance away, was unhurt.
Tatra National Park officials have been reminding tourists that in unsettled weather it is very dangerous to be in the upper parts of the trails, on ridges, where there are security chains, and near water.
Ten-kilometre-long Chochołowska Valley, the longest valley in the Polish Tatras, is a spectacular though undemanding walking route, very popular with visitors.
