Anna Gembicka made the assessment in an interview with state broadcaster TVP Info on Friday, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s IAR news agency reported.

‘Poland is secure’

The minister said: “Poland has a big export surplus - food exports totalled almost PLN 40 billion (EUR 8.75 billion) last year.”

She added: “When it comes to key products such as milk, sugar, wheat, poultry and beef, we are secure.”

Food prices likely to keep rising amid war in Ukraine

At the same time, Gembicka noted that food prices “will likely continue to rise, due to the war in Ukraine, among other factors.”

Ukraine’s harvest is expected to be 40 percent smaller this year than in 2021, because of the Russian invasion, the minister noted.

Russia’s assault on Ukraine has raised the prospect of hunger in areas that previously relied on food imports from these two countries, experts have warned.

Poland has offered to help its southeastern neighbour in the export of grain, after Russia blockaded Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea.

Friday is day 100 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
