Poland's Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMiGW) has issued the highest, third-degree heat alert for the country's eastern Podkarpackie and Lubelskie provinces, as well as for parts of Świętokrzyskie and Małopolskie in the south, and the central region of Mazowieckie, which includes the capital Warsaw.
The IMiGW predicted that the mercury could reach between 34 and 37 degrees Celsius in those areas during the day.
For the rest of the country, the institute issued a second-degree heat alert, which means that the maximum temperature during the day was expected to range from 30 to 34 C, and locally 35 C.
The third-degree alert means the possibility of extreme weather events causing high damage and posing a threat to people's lives.
